A Legacy of Devotion, Culture and Community

In the middle of an aristrocrat society of Bhowanipur, way back in 1939 , a few educated and erudite people decided to have a Sarbojonin Durga Utsav, the largest in the world and started a Puja in the corner of a small field. Since then the festival continued for decades.

23 Pally Durga Mandir is a cherished spiritual and cultural institution with a legacy , when the journey began as 23 Pally Sarbojanin Durgotsab Samity. Which started as a community celebration of Durga Puja gradually evolved into a permanent centre of devotion, art, culture and community life.

A defining chapter in this journey came in 1986, with the inauguration of the Mandir and its distinctive 14-foot-tall Ashtadhatu Durga idol, which is the largest in the world,to the best of our knowledge and belief. The temple complex also houses the Shiva Temple and Radha-Krishna Temple, together creating a sacred space rooted in faith and tradition.

From 1986, the affairs of 23 Pally Durga Mandir were managed by the 23 Pally Durga Mandir Trust. In 2007, the Trust was dissolved and the 23 Pally Durga Mandir Society was established as a registered society under the Societies Act, 1961, Government of West Bengal.

A new Executive Body was constituted to oversee the administration and day-to-day affairs of the Mandir.

Today, the 23 Pally Durga Mandir Society carries this legacy of devotional approach with a Sanatani flavour with a continued commitment to worshipping our own diety, art, culture, service and community.

The Mandir continues to bring generations together through worship, celebration and fellowship, while preserving the traditions that have shaped its identity over the decades.

From a community tradition that begun in 1939 to a spiritual and cultural institution of today, 23 Pally Durga Mandir Society continues to honour its heritage while looking towards the future.
